Meet Our Leaders

Joseph Azzopardi

On July 10th, 2015 the Delegates of District Council 9 unanimously elected Joseph Azzopardi to the office of Business Manager / Secretary Treasurer. Joseph has been a leading figure in the finishing trades industry for over 15 years. A charismatic and effective leader Joseph has never been afraid of a fight, especially on behalf of the workers he represents.

Born on November 3rd, 1975 in West Islip NY, and raised in North Babylon, NY. He started his glazing career as an apprentice in 2001. Immediately his commitment to the union was obvious and it wasn’t long before Joseph’s dedication was recognized. Starting out as a Shop Steward of Local Union 1281/1087, he advanced through the union ranks serving his local over the years in many elected positions including Council Delegate, Financial Secretary, and Executive Board Member.

Throughout his career, Joseph has been a strong supporter of working safely and made it his mission early on to impress this upon his union brothers and sisters through education and example. With the belief that through ongoing education and training, he and his fellow glaziers can live longer more productive lives, he volunteered after work and on weekends to instruct safety and apprentice classes.

In 2009 Joseph was appointed as an Organizer for Local 1087/District Council 9. The Local Union’s membership has thrived and the members have enjoyed some of the biggest negotiated increases in the history of the Local Union. They have also become one of the most active Locals in the District Council. As a testimony to his achievements, Joseph held that position until elected DC 9 President in 2014 after the passing of William A. Elfeld, who was a mentor to Joseph.

Joseph has now been elected as Business Manager- Secretary Treasurer of District Council 9 to fill out the term of BM/ST elect, Joseph Ramaglia. In addition to his responsibilities as Business Manager his union affiliations are vast and Joseph sits on many boards. He is an executive board member of the NYC Central Labor Council, the Greater New York Building Trades, and the NYS AFL-CIO. Joseph also serves his membership by acting as a trustee on many funds, such as the Painting Industry Insurance and Annuity Funds, the Structural Steel Painters Trust and Annuity Funds and the Drywall Tapers Insurance Funds.

His responsibilities demand countless hours however Joseph always makes time for his wife Keri and son Luca.
