Annual Tim Ahern Scholarship
The New York Structural Steel Painting Contractors Association Industry Promotion Fund

In honor of Tim Ahern Sr., NYSSPCA is proud to announce the “Tim Ahern Annual Scholarship”. Raised in a small village in Limerick, Ireland, Tim came over to America at the age of 21. His career started out painting fire escapes in NYC. In 1964 he founded Ahern Painting Contractors. Mr. Ahern was one of the founding members of the New York Structural Steel Painting Contractors Association. Today, they’ve become a leading union liaison with some of the most trained and skilled structural steel painters in the world. As a hardworking businessman and community leader, Mr. Ahern has made a huge impact in the industrial painting industry. His legacy will continue to impact the members of Local 806.

The Contributing Employers to this fund, who are signed with Local 806, District Council #9, IUPAT, have created the Tim Ahern Scholarship Fund to encourage and assist the children of journeyman members in their employ to achieve a higher education.

Application deadline is August 2023

QUALIFICATIONS

 To qualify the applicant must:

  • Be the son or daughter of a member in good standing of Local 806 who has earned eligibility working for an employer who has contributed to the New York Structural Steel Industry Promotion Fund.
  • Be a high school senior who will be graduating during the current academic year and will enter their first year of college in September in any accredited 4-year university.
  • Has maintained a B average in high school.

HOW WINNERS ARE DETERMINED

 The Scholarship Advisory Committee of the New York Structural Steel Painting Contractors Association will evaluate applications based on but not limited to, High School academic record, extracurricular activities, personal interview, and test scores.

TO MAINTAIN THE SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

A Scholarship Award winner who makes satisfactory progress towards their degree, meeting the standards set by the college and the Tim Ahern Scholarship Fund, may retain the scholarship for 4 years. It is mandatory that the students qualify each year by furnishing their college transcript demonstrating that they have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for the entire school year.

If a recipient’s studies are interrupted by illness, accident, change in college enrollment, or other circumstances, such information must be reported promptly to the Tim Ahern Scholarship Committee. Requests for a recipient’s scholarship to be held in abeyance can be considered.

 HOW TO APPLY

 To be considered for the Scholarship Award:

  • Fill out the application and return it to the Tim Ahern Scholarship Fund Committee
  • Have the completed application signed by your High school principal or guidance counselor
  • The School seal must be affixed to page 3
  • Mail the application promptly to:
